A Split-night Test is a specialised sleep study designed to diagnose and initiate treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) in a single overnight session. It combines a standard diagnostic polysomnography (PSG) with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) titration when OSA is detected early in the night.
What Does a Split-night Test Measure?
During a Split-night Test, we monitor key sleep parameters, including:
- Breathing patterns – to detect apnoeas (pauses in breathing) and hypopnoeas (shallow breathing episodes).
- Oxygen levels – to assess how well oxygen is delivered throughout the body during sleep.
- Heart rate and rhythm – to evaluate cardiovascular response to breathing disturbances.
- Brain activity – to record sleep stages and disturbances.
- Limb movements – to identify restless leg syndrome or other movement disorders.
Who Needs a Split-night Test?
A Split-night Test is recommended for patients with a high likelihood of moderate to severe OSA, particularly those who experience:
- Loud snoring and witnessed apnoeas (breathing stoppages during sleep).
- Excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue.
- Morning headaches or difficulty concentrating.
- High blood pressure or other cardiovascular concerns linked to OSA.
What to Expect During the Test
The test is conducted in a sleep laboratory at one of our Manse Medical locations. The night is divided into two parts:
- Diagnostic Phase – In the first half of the night, we monitor your sleep and breathing to determine if OSA is present and assess its severity.
- CPAP Titration Phase – If moderate to severe OSA is detected, CPAP therapy is introduced during the second half of the night. The CPAP device gently delivers air pressure through a mask to keep your airway open. The pressure is adjusted in real-time to determine the optimal settings for effective treatment.
How to Prepare for a Split-night Test
To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guidelines:
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of the test, as they can affect sleep quality.
- Take prescribed medications unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
- Bring comfortable sleepwear and any personal items you need for an overnight stay.
- Shower before arriving and avoid using lotions or oils on your skin, as they can interfere with sensor adhesion.
- Arrive on time to allow for setup and ensure a smooth testing process.
What Happens After the Test?
Following your Split-night Test, a sleep specialist will review your results and provide recommendations. If CPAP therapy is prescribed, further adjustments and follow-up appointments may be needed to optimise your treatment and improve your sleep quality.
