Home In-Lab Sleep Study

Have you been referred for attended level-1 sleep studies by your doctor? Have you heard the term and are curious about what it means? Are you not getting enough sleep, and looking for help to find out why?

Manse Medical conducts attended level-1 sleep studies to diagnose and inform the provision of treatment for various sleep disorders, helping patients get a more fulfilling sleep.

What is an Attended Level-1 Sleep Study?

Attended Level-1 Sleep Studies are an important step in the diagnosis and treatment of certain sleep disorders, such as sleep apnoea diagnosis. During these studies, patients are monitored and evaluated while they sleep in a lab by an experienced and qualified sleep technician.

These studies involve the recording of metrics such as brain waves, eye movements, and other body activities while the patient is sleeping. The results of the study are then used to diagnose and treat any underlying sleep disorders, such as sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, insomnia, and more.

The results of the sleep study can be used to provide a better understanding of the patient’s sleep patterns and develop a treatment plan that will help improve the quality of the patient’s sleep.

What are the benefits of an Attended Level-1 Sleep Study?

If you are experiencing sleeping difficulties, undergoing treatment for a diagnosed sleep disorder, or you have been diagnosed with other conditions that are caused and/or worsened by a sleep disorder (e.g. high blood pressure, cardiac disease, diabetes, obesity, stroke etc.), there are many benefits you can get from participating in Attended Level-1 Sleep Studies.

Comprehensive sleep-related metrics

Attended Level-1 studies measure a range of sleep related metrics, such as;

  • Sleep latency
  • Sleep duration
  • Sleep efficiency
  • Number of awakenings

They also capture a detailed breakdown of sleep stages and cycles, including REM (rapid eye movement) and non-REM sleep, and they measure the levels of oxygen saturation in the blood, as well as heart rate and breathing patterns.

These metrics can be used to identify and diagnose various sleep disorders and to determine the most effective treatment plan for a patient.

Controlled observational environment

Attended Level-1 Sleep Studies provide a comfortable and secure environment for patients to get the restful sleep they need while their sleep can be monitored by a qualified sleep technician. The study room is equipped with a comfortable bed, and designed to eliminate potential sleep disturbances such as noises, lights, and other environmental factors that could potentially disrupt sleep.

The staff are knowledgeable and highly trained in administering the study and providing a safe and secure environment for the patient, monitoring each patient throughout the study to ensure the patient is comfortable and safe at all times.

What sleep disorders can Attended Level-1 Sleep Studies help diagnose?

Attended Level-1 Sleep Studies can help to diagnose the following sleep disorders:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
  • Central Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
  • Insomnia
  • Idiopathic Hypersomnia
  • Narcolepsy
  • And more.

What can I expect from an Attended Level-1 Sleep Study?

Before the study

When you are referred for an Attended Level-1 Sleep Study, you liaise with the sleep technicians at one of Manse Medical’s various sleep clinics. They will walk you through the setup process of the tools that will monitor your sleeping patterns, as well as brief you on what to expect from your sleep study, both in terms of the actual monitoring process and the results.

During the study

At Manse Medical, we understand that the key to a successful Attended Level-1 Sleep Study is your comfort, which is why we take every possible measure to ensure that all of our patients have a comfortable and successful sleep study experience. During the study, we provide a comfortable bed and pillow and make sure the room is at a comfortable temperature, as well as block out any noise or light distractions. Our staff is available to assist you throughout the night, and you may request assistance at any time during your study.

Tests and monitoring

During your sleep study, you will be fitted with sensors for the continuous monitoring of oxygen levels, heart rate, respiratory rate, and snoring. In addition, your body movements and position during sleep are recorded.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is used to measure brain activity and determine the stage of sleep. An electrocardiogram (ECG) is used to monitor heart rate and rhythm. A nasal cannula is used to measure airflow and snoring, and an oximeter is used to measure oxygen levels.

Lastly, video and audio recordings are taken to observe the patient’s sleep pattern and behavior.

Follow up care

Your sleep study results will be reviewed by the sleep specialist to determine whether you have a sleep disorder. Depending on the results, you may be provided with lifestyle changes, medication, and/or additional tests. The sleep specialist will also provide you with any other necessary information, tools and resources about your condition to ensure that you are best equipped to achieve the best possible sleep outcomes.
