What is a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS)?
A Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) is a custom-made oral device designed to treat obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and snoring. It is worn during sleep and works by gently repositioning the lower jaw (mandible) forward to keep the airway open, reducing airway collapse and improving airflow.
How Does a MAS Work?
During sleep, the muscles that support the airway relax, which can lead to obstruction and interrupted breathing, commonly known as obstructive sleep apnoea. A MAS holds the lower jaw in a slightly forward position, preventing the tongue and soft tissues from blocking the airway. This results in improved breathing, reduced snoring, and better sleep quality.
Who Needs a MAS?
A MAS is recommended for individuals diagnosed with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea or those who suffer from chronic snoring. It is often prescribed when continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is not well tolerated or when a non-invasive alternative is preferred. MAS may also be suitable for people with positional OSA, where symptoms are worse when sleeping on the back.
The Process of Getting a MAS at Manse Medical
- Assessment & Consultation: A comprehensive assessment with a Manse Medical sleep specialist is the first step. This includes a review of sleep history, symptoms, and any previous sleep studies to determine if MAS is a suitable treatment option.
- Sleep Study (if required): In some cases, a diagnostic sleep study may be recommended to evaluate the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea and confirm that MAS is an appropriate intervention.
- Custom Fitting: If a MAS is deemed suitable, a referral will be made to a qualified dentist or oral health specialist who will take impressions of your teeth and jaw to create a custom-fitted device tailored to your specific needs.
- Device Adjustment & Follow-Up: Once your MAS is ready, it will be fitted and adjusted to ensure comfort and effectiveness. Follow-up appointments will monitor progress, address any concerns, and make necessary adjustments to optimise results.
- Ongoing Monitoring: Regular check-ins with your sleep specialist and dentist will help assess long-term effectiveness and ensure continued comfort and compliance.
