Why aren’t adults getting enough sleep? We all have a rough night every now and again, but in Australia, adults are consistently getting far less sleep than they need. Men in particular.
This is an issue that needs to be fixed. And to be able to do this, we’ve got to ask the question: why?Why is it that men aren’t sleeping as much as they should? The University or Oregon may have one of the answers. In a recent study titled “The Sleep-Deprived Masculinity Stereotype,” researchers at said university analyzed the perception of various sleep scenarios as they related to two characteristics; “very manly” and “not very manly.”
In short they asked, “do ‘real men’ need sleep?”
The response was a resounding ‘”no.”Participants who were asked to imagine themselves as getting more sleep than average said they felt significantly less masculine, and when told to describe the characteristics of a ‘very many man’ versus a ‘not very manly man’, the latter ended up being given 33 minutes more sleep.According to the stereotype, the manlier you are, the less sleep you need.
This is an extremely dangerous standard to hold. For two reasons.
For one, sleep is good. It improves your mood & concentration, makes you stronger, healthier & more social, as well as improving your quality of work.
On the other hand, poor sleep can derail your mood and concentration, leaving you short tempered and irritable. It makes you more susceptible to bad eating habits and lethargy, and also raises your blood pressure, increasing risk of heart attack and stroke.
The assumption that ‘stronger,’ ‘manlier’ men need to sleep less is ridiculous and unfounded.
Men who sleep less are unpleasant to be around, have a lower standard of work and have a higher chance of early death.
There’s nothing good about that.
And if getting a good night’s sleep for you is easier said than done, you’re in the same boat as a lot of other blokes. Do the right thing and speak to your doctor, or get in touch with us. We’d love to change that for you.Man up, and sleep well. -Source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisonescalante/2020/10/05/real-men-dont-sleep-research-finds-this-masculine-stereotype-hurts-men/#7210cc3853fd
