Sex and Sleep Apnea

Having a poor night’s sleep can make it hard to get up… and hard to get up.Research that’s been emerging in the last few years is suggesting that there might be a link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and erectile dysfunction (ED).Image Credit: Shutterstock
Both a 2009 study by the Journal of Sexual Medicine and a separate study in 2016, found that around two thirds of male participants with OSA, also had ED. In another study from 2016 looking at men with ED, more than half of the participants also had OSA.
The reason these two disorders are linked is still unclear, although scientists think it’s possibly a result of OSA lowering testosterone production in a man as well as restricting oxygen. In addition, of course, to just the general fatigue that comes alongside OSA.The effects of obstructive sleep apnea are not just limited to the individual, but also their bed partner. This can be a result of reasons discussed above, but also, the snoring which generally characterises OSA can lead to a poor night’s sleep for both people. The effects of this can be excessive daytime sleepiness, mood swings, and an increase in anxiety and depression.Treating disorders like OSA is not just important, but vital. The evidence suggests that on top of of the short term drain OSA has on quality of life, it can actually be fatal in the long term.If you, or someone you know, has trouble sleeping, then please talk to your GP, and get in touch with us to find out how we may be able to help.
